Well, this is a splendid idea for a first post! Even before making an Introduction! ... I'll-- save that for later.
I think we can all agree this is one of the parts in the film EVERYONE rags on-- while I never, at any point while watching, thought it was all that bad! Oh, sure, there could be a couple more creative endings that wouldn't have seemed so rehashed, but... well, what else could've feasibly worked?
A couple of my postulations I've worked out:
1) He could get shot. ... and-- die. But... that'd just be miserable and depressing.
2) The all-knowing Easter Bunny-Bruce Willis could come in-- this time just as a regular Joe perusing the stores, since... Labor Day doesn't have any mascots. Then he'd notice something's a little screwy and, like, go all Gabby-Metal Detector Hobo-Sleigh Rider-Joey Fingers-UPS Guy on him, finally tying together all the characters into ONE glorious persona. He and could have some brutal... brawl utilizing all manner of furniture and other... shopping bric-a-brac! You can't say that wouldn't fit the whimsy of the rest of the show!
3) Okay, so maybe it SHOULD still be a dream... but since North runs into his parents' arms at the end, it should PARALLEL the run in his dream just a little more-- to show just how much both of them mean to each other, even when there's no timers on the line. And then, instead of having a talk, it could end with them in each other's arms-- for REALS this time.
4) Hey, Gabby's coin really didn't come to ANY fruition, and they spent SO much time getting it back to North! What if North gets shot, and the bullet goes THROUGH his jacket and EVERYTHING, but it gets STUCK in the HOLE in the coin?! So-- Gabby really IS North's guardian angel, even when he's not around in the slightest!
5) Winchell has a sudden change-of-heart and calls off Viva el Norte-- for Norte! Hey, they ARE best'est of friends-- he's GOTTA remember all of that. Or was North just a stepping stone... ? *makes a lemon-face of contemplation* At any rate, Winchell could realize that this no longer is benefiting any of child-kind, and what sort of megalomaniacal and inhuman monster of a child journalist he's become!
6) North DOES get shot by Al, but non-fatally, thanks to the coin or whatnot. At any rate, he DOES land in his parent's arms, just as the ruling stipulates. Winchell, Al, and Arthur Belt are all taken to court-- this time AGAINST North, and lose for charges of child assault and attempted murder.
7) Or... you know, something of a mixture of these-- or other hypotheses not mentioned! Whatever strikes your creative fancy. This is all the stuff I could think of. Please to be contributing more, according to your imagination! Not only that, but VOTE on what's here! *pointpoint!* This is one of the parts where apparently North really "failed"-- it's one of the moments that really turns off viewers-- so there's GOTTA be a better way to approach the resolution!
